there comes a time in my garden when the tomatoes are growing a little too helter skelter. i know that i need to help them out a little, or they'll become a tangled, mangled mess before their time. (although, they do end up like that at some point.) :) i'm no expert gardener, so i don't really know if this is accepted practice, but it has worked for me over the years.
at first i used twine to tie up the stray branches for a bit of extra support. then came the day when a trip to buy twine wasn't what i wanted to do with my time, so i wondered if i might have something else to use. also, the twine we find comes in a totally unnecessary plastic wrapper. so... yarn.
the reason i liked to use twine...and that i think 100% cotton yarn is a good choice...is that they biodegrade. when it comes time to put the garden to rest for the winter, i want as little work as possible. i just rip out the vines, clipping string as needed to be able to remove the cages, and plop the whole vine mess into the compost. it all turns back into rich soil over time... vine, twine, yarn and all.

just thought i'd share, because it is a great way to use up those bits of yarn lefover after a project is finished. zero-waste and the garden are natural pals. :)
