i need to keep coming back to my values:
-desire less
-less excess
-use what i have
-care for what i have
-reusing what already exists
-fair wages for those who make my clothing
-clean water and environmental conditions surrounding the area of making
-organic natural fibers
-less waste to the landfill
-quality so it lasts
-keep it simple
-desire less
let's see if i can make that more concise…like a mantra i can recall in a moment of weakness or lusty oblivion. less. but if new, reuse, fair wages, clean materials. but always less. not really that concise, but something like that. :) or maybe i should just stick with what vivienne westwood said, "buy less. choose well. make it last."
i have discovered over and over that less is the key. less makes it easier to meet any one of this long list of goals/values. it reminds me of bea johnson's guideline for zero waste living: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot…and only in that order. in my closet reduce comes first and then refuse to fill it back up…this is my 'less'. less allows me to wait and consciously search for just the right item that i know i will keep and love for a long time. less might also allow me the time to realize that the item is actually unnecessary.
if you are just starting out or beginning to be aware of any of these issues, start small, if you like. just pick one or two to focus on for now. for inspiration about less take a look around here and also at project 333 or unfancy. do an autumn-long experiment/challenge. it's fun.
it is still quite hot here every day, and i know that my transition to autumn won't come for another couple months. right now i just need to remind myself of what i already have, so that i don't buy redundant items. i don't want to get sucked into buying just because i find something cute. i have last season's lists of items and silhouettes i wear most. i am reviewing what worked last year…and most likely, i am going to stay the course. i really like what i have. i have my "basics" (striped tees, faded jeans, soft sweaters, brown leather boots). if i detect any holes in my wardrobe (maybe a jumpsuit- i love the one i have for summer), i will write down those items and shop specifically for them… and i will consider handmade (by me).
i will also look at my culled pinterest board for a/w clothing to get inspired for the season ahead. i will look at the collections i like…but mainly to be inspired to use what i already have. and if i find something truly amazing that meets my values and will be versatile in my wardrobe, i just might buy it. fashion is fun after all!
what are your values when it comes to clothing?
