"Thinking it over, I realize that the most powerful action I can take toward societal improvement will have to start very close to home, arising not from the need to leave a mark on history, but from empathy and sincere understanding of the place in my life where neglect exists." ~Rachel Corrie in Do It Anyway by Courtney E. That always has been my approach to making the world a good place. Instead of "leaving a mark on history" or becoming a famous/important person, I always thought that we have to be good, loving and caring towards the people who surround us in our immediate everyday life. And be empathatic towards to ones whose suffering we don't see either because we can't see inside strangers or because they are to far away.

I hear you. It is hard to find the right balance. I have to remind myself that I cannot take on the pain of the whole world. It would crush me. Doing the small thing in front of me with great love is enough for this moment...and then doing the next thing and the next. Being aware of the suffering around us makes us better...more sensitive + compassionate...more able to live in a way that helps rather than furthers the hurt. Holding onto our own sanity, so that we can do so, is necessary too. Thank you for the article, Elisa...horror + perspective.
