i've lived in century old houses with kitchens oozing potential character (not to mention a large hole in the floor that i covered with a piece of furniture)...and i've lived in newly built apartments with clean, unsoiled surfaces.  the kitchen i find myself in today falls somewhere in between.  this house was built in the eighties.

the kitchen does have wood cabinets, a countertop that i don't hate, and laminate wood floors.  i picked none of the finishes.  i would love a whole new kitchen.

i've sketched this new kitchen.  it is lovely.  my new kitchen would be open and bright and have room for a big long table.  it would involve removing walls and cabinets and a new floor.  there would be another window and sunbeams and the smell of
lavender wafting in on the breeze.

yeah.  so that's not going to happen any time soon.  and i'm allergic to lavender.

instead, one of my goals for january was to touch up the paint on my upper kitchen cabinets.  drastic, huh?  small steps.  i started by caulking the join between the ceiling and the cabinet (made such a huge difference to me, truly).  the inside of my closed cabinet got a brightening coat (or 7-uggh) of white and all the cabinets were touched up to a bright and clean state.  finally, sparkly glass knobs were added (it only took me 5 years).

i've never touched the bottom cabinets (with a paint brush), but they need a new coat of paint now.  i would like to paint the ceiling, and there is a whole bank of cabinets surrounding the fridge that will get a fresh lick o' paint as well.  i think i need to wait for a bit of fresh air to accompany my efforts, so that gives me a month or so to figure out a paint color for the cabinets.

anyway, i'm using what i have...and that creates a lot less waste as well.
  :)

love,
jane
