years ago, we lived in los angeles. in some ways, it felt like a two year sunshine filled vacation. i put jo on the back of my bike and rode into our little downtown area. i walked to the post office, while she rode her tricycle. we spent lazy saturdays at the beach flying a kite, running from waves, and watching the sun sink in to the ocean.
in the years since, we've traveled back to this coast time after time. it calls to us, and sometimes my heart just aches for the light, the waves, the beauty of it all.
this year's road trip involved a week in los angeles. there are many little neighborhoods that have changed over the years... each with a flavor of its own. here are a few of my current favorites:
1. the atwater village area of glendale boulevard is home to tacos villa corona, which we were looking forward to trying... but it was closed when we got there. we tried proof bakery instead and loved the baguettes stuffed with peppers, radishes, greens, and goat cheese + the tiny peach, strawberry and blueberry pies we split. individual medley was a treat to wander... and apparently beyonce shops there. :)

general store :: venice
2. venice is home to my favorite shop anywhere, general store. it just embodies the california that i love. a few more shops have joined it on lincoln blvd, so we enjoyed exploring those a bit too. the shops there are independent with singular vibes. places like a warehouse with vintage finds spilling over into a collection of old buses and campers... and christy dawn's dress shop.
lily ashwell's shop is a short drive away on rose ave... and is lovely.
lunch had to be kippy's ice-cream. it is organic and made with coconut and honey. they serve it in real bowls with real spoons. i love that zero-waste is not a puzzling concept in LA.
industry of all nations
venice's abbot kinney blvd. has gone from being the gritty, quirky place we remember (+ loved) to being one of the hippest spots in the city. it's a bit disorienting, but there are some good places to scout out. i was happy to see that industry of all nations has a shop there. it was one of the first truly fair-trade brands i learned about years ago and does it right.

there is a lot of eye candy to be found along abbot kinney. brands like cuyana, marine layer, and the piece collective have shops here. we ate at kreation organic kafe in part because we could see that they served water in mason jars with metal straws. i loved my salmon tacos with both corn + bean salad and tomato + cucumber salad. yum!

3. topanga canyon is one of my favorites. it's a beautiful drive through the canyon, windows down + hair blowing in the breeze. we set out with the intention of stopping at topanga table for brunch and were not disappointed. their focus is local, organic, and sustainable. jo + i had blueberry pancakes with strawberries on top. julia had an egg sandwich with vegetables and potatoes on the side. delicious.
we stopped at hidden treasures vintage along the way. it is truly a treasure trove of vintage goodness.

we finally landed at our favorite beach in malibu... point dume. a stop at grom ice-cream was planned, but somehow noone felt like ice-cream. next time. :)
