Reading :: these transporting words on "balled melon as a snack"
going near the water until my skin feels
like it's actually melting off. I like to feel
the sun penetrating down to my bones,
to get sweaty, eyelids closing. I like my
speech to slow, my limbs to get heavy. I
watch my skin deepen shades in a single
day, I read a few pages of a book and
then need to take a nap.
Sometimes I think I could leave it
all behind and go burn out on an island
somewhere and just eat fruit. Usually
by the time I'm having that thought I
remember the bag of melon balls in
my cooler.
Like jumping into the cold waves, the
feeling of eating an ice-cold melon ball
instantly revitalizes and quenches. I don't
think there is anything that even comes
Close. Melons are in peak season in the
height of summer and early tall-ripe
cantaloupe and honeydew should have
a strong sweet scent when held up to
your nose, and watermelons should have
a nice hollow sound when tapped. You
could squeeze some lime juice on the
melon balls or chop up a little mint--but
I prefer them plain and ice cold.
