everyday zero-waste :: mornings

I've had my ups + downs with zero-waste mornings. Some switches were simple (package-free soap...once I found it). Some switches involved a progression, (first recycled/recyclable plastic toothbrushes) because it took a few years for the alternative (bamboo toothbrushes) to arrive in our country. Some things like shampoo involved quite a lot of trial + error. Face moisturizer that I liked was found one year, but the maker had disappeared by the time I needed a replacement. Now I'm happy to have found a new replacement! The transition hasn't been super quick or easy...but I'm happy with quite a lot of what I'm using at the moment.  :)

Some of my favorites:
-Meow Meow Tweet skin cream :: for my face
-home made
toothpaste
-home made lip balm
-Lush conditioner bar :: tried + didn't like this for my hair...now I use it on my body at the end of my shower + follow with a quick rinse...I don't feel greasy + don't need to apply lotion
-wooden comb :: strangely it feels like my hair dries faster now...which I like, because I don't use a hairdryer
-bamboo toothbrush

Love,
Jane

Good save on the conditioner bar! I'm afraid a lot of people would have thrown it away, creating more waste, instead of finding another use for it.

Lovely, lovely! I’m curious, do you wear any makeup?

Thank you! I don't wear make-up most of the time. I find that the less I wear it, the clearer my skin looks. I've always preferred the natural look + never liked wearing foundation. When I want to, I add a little blush + maybe a bit of eyeshadow + mascara. I'm going to add some beet juice to my next lip balm batch, because my favorite Burt's Bees was the pomegranate (for the bit of color). :)

Such a pretty picture they make!

I’m so looking forward to getting to this point, but it seams like a long way to go when I look in our cupboards. Also I feel torn between the feeling of waste if I don’t use up the products I already have and concern about if I really want to continue the use of all these things I really don’t know what is.

I hear you! It can be a good way to find substitutes thoughtfully + to save some money...but it also may be possible to donate some opened items to a shelter, if preferred. I'd just check first to see if they would be used/useful. :)

Thanks for the tip! The woman shelter in town is goverment run and I didn’t think they accepted donations but they were happy to collect them. This was new and unused items as I have recieved a lot through work so now it’s just to use up the leftovers. So hopefully I will try making my own products in the fall! 😅
