blahs be gone

It's about that time of year, when the winter blahs can kick in. A few too many days in a row with overcast skies + my mood can start to suffer. This year I collected a few things in anticipation of the winter blahs:

#1 :: A bright yellow planner. It might become my signature thing, because it is like a little ray of sunshine at my side. (I'm just waiting on my sticker for the front.)
#2 :: These pants. I bought this fabric to make a dress last summer, but just didn't know if I'd wear it a ton. I made these pants in January + I wear them as much as I can. Jo suggested it be a tradition...make bright pants every January. January pants. I'm sold! I made these from a vintage Esprit pattern (warm, fuzzy, 80s feelings for days!).
#3 :: Positivity Kit. I saw this book while Christmas shopping + bought it on the spot. I never do that, but I just knew that this book would be appreciated right about now. I love it. There are simple little prompts that get me thinking about happy things + doodling too.

It was surprising to realize that each one of these things was a spontaneous purchase done with complete confidence. I cannot tell you how rare that is for me. I don't usually just buy things, but I don't regret these few things one bit.

Of course, blahs get busted most often not by buying things but rather by doing things...like...
- taking a walk outside
- sharing a juicy, jewel-like grapefruit
- drinking ginger, lemon, honey tea whether we have colds or not
- watching the birds at our feeder
- catching the sunset every evening while making dinner
- reading a book in a sunny spot
- watching a good movie with my favorite people
- sewing pockets onto everything that needs them
- spraying citrus scent onto my shirt
- listening to old favorite music
- picking out some new library books
- exploring a museum
- chatting with a far away friend
- lighting a candle
- knitting with brightly colored yarn
- baking ginger snaps
- growing sprouts

What are your favorite winter blahs busters?

Love,
Jane

Thank you for this list! Being from Maine, I welcome all ideas to beat the winter blues. Tomorrow I will go for a walk in the woods and I try to keep a beeswax candle lit much of the time as I read. I have been watching The Crown and enjoying my house full of plants and sunshine from south facing windows. When the grand kids aren't sick😷I spend time with them.

Thank you so much for this! Maine winter sounds long, but beautiful...and you get those amazing summers! :) We've enjoyed The Crown as well and a house full of plants in the sunshine = lovely!! The last part made me smile! :)

My favourite blah busters are the same any time of year: reading, knitting, eating dark chocolate, drinking tea, going to yoga class.

Lovely list! My favorite winter pick-me-up is definitely getting outside for a walk (or march, these days), and the library -- specifically, I've been having a lot of fun requesting creative & inspiring books, and waiting for them to arrive from other libraries or borrowers kind of makes it feel like a special treat. It sounds super nerdy as I type it, but the books bring me so much joy without added clutter (or cost), perfect for holing up in a cozy winter spot. Current favorites: Ladies Drawing Night, and Slow Stitch. Eagerly awaiting the 3191 Miles Apart book.
Cheers,
Jess
