let death be what takes us, not a lack of imagination. ~b.j. miller (a lovely listen)

there comes a time in my garden when the tomatoes are growing a little too helter skelter. i know that i need to help them out a little, or they'll become a tangled, mangled mess before their time. (although, they do end up like that at some point.) :) i'm no expert gardener, so i don't really know if this is accepted practice, but it has worked for me over the years. at first i used twine to tie up the stray branches for a bit of extra support. then came the day when a trip to buy twine wasn't what i wanted to do with my time, so i wondered if i might have something else to use. also, the twine we find comes in a totally unnecessary plastic wrapper. so... yarn. the reason i liked to use twine...and that i think 100% cotton yarn is a good choice...is that they biodegrade. when it comes time to put the garden to rest for the winter, i want as little work as possible. i just rip out the vines, clipping string as needed to be able to remove the cages, and plop the whole vine mess into the compost. it all turns back into rich soil over time... vine, twine, yarn and all. just thought i'd share, because it is a great way to use up those bits of yarn lefover after a project is finished. zero-waste and the garden are natural pals. :)
love, jane june's wardrobe came out of a travel bag for the first half of the month. my travel wardrobe worked out wonderfully well. i was so happy with my little collection of pieces that could mix and match for the different weather situations. it was in the upper 60s and lower 70s F for most of the trip, although there were a few hot days in los angeles and on the road. we had our coldest evening during a brilliant lumineers concert, so i was happy for both my warm sweater and jacket. we were able to do laundry once a week, which made the amount of clothes we took work well. it also helped that we didn't get very sweaty in the cooler temperatures, so we could wear some things a few times without feeling gross. :)
the second half of the month was spent doing laundry :), and wearing my warm weather clothes. i didn't let anything go this month, but did add the two pieces i mentioned previously. so here are the pieces i'm going to wear in july... jumpsuits: -navy -clay -tan -black tops: -white tank -black tee -red block print shorts: -denim cut-offs dress: -white linen layer: -grey cardigan shoes: -flip-flops -clog sandals total: 12 pieces jumpsuits and dresses are one-piece dressing options that i love. i'm all about simple, and it doesn't get anymore simple than that. linen and cotton are going to keep me cool, i hope. going bare foot is my preference, but slipping flip-flops on is easy enough. if i want to look a bit less casual, i'll put on my clog sandals. the grey cardigan gets thrown in my bag for chilly air-conditioned spots. that's about it. i'm as ready for the heat of july as i can be. how is your summer wardrobe serving you? love, jane it was one of those days... i really should have gone to the grocery store. i thought i'd make pancakes for dinner, but then realized we were out of milk. so, i decided to see if there was anything in the garden that could help me out. we are still right at the beginning of things, but five minutes later and i had these! our first cucumber, a little variety of tomatoes and some chives...perfect. when combined with some noodles (bought in cardboard box), feta (from the salad bar), basil, lemon, salt and pepper... it's a meal... and a tasty one at that.
thanks garden, you never stop amazing me! :) love, jane hot + sticky days coming right up!
looking forward to wearing a simple wardrobe made up of easy, breezy, linen goodness. there are a few more projects waiting, so i'm gearing up to paint... again. i have a stack of favorite books to reread from the library. always decluttering and aspiring. enjoying cucumbers + tomatoes from the garden. julia went through her books again, so we're headed off to resell them. looking forward to fireworks and some ice-cream tonight! for all the americans, happy independence day! :) love, jane you mustn’t wish for another life.
you mustn’t want to be somebody else. what you must do is this: rejoice evermore. pray without ceasing. in everything give thanks. i am not all the way capable of so much, but those are the right instructions. ~wendell berry |
